New years resolutions 2009

Published by mark at 9:46 am under Uncategorized

First off, I’m writing on my iphone using the wordpress app. Typing on this thing is more like a leaky ball point than Fred Wilson’s quill pen. More iPhone comments later.

1) invest more (time, energy, love, passion, sweat, beer consumption with like minded souls) in Austin. I have made a ton of amazing friends in California the past 4+ years flying to LA most weeks, then scratching my head when all of the opportunities coming my way are based I’m California. As it turns out, the plants you love, nurture, and feed tend to thrive. I got mad California love for my peeps out there but this is the year of the Austin, yo.

2). Spend more time in NYC. Sure it contradicts with #1 but I’ll give myself a year to figure that out. There is a weird brooklyn Austin connection, so creative cities need each other this century. Not a big believer in zero sum games.

3). More destruction and more creation. 2008 was a year of treading water in a lot of ways, speaking at least for my experience on the set of the yahoo soap opera. This resolution means saying yes more but just as importantly saying no more. Or, as Seth said in “the dip” learning what to quit and focusing on what you can master. With the ridiculous bail outs of one failed enterprise after another going on, I am reminded by @alanwarms of the critical importance of “creative destruction” in capitalism. I’m a free market flag waver and a true believer of all forms of freedom, so I will endeavor to embrace the destruction of dead wood while also planting and caring for new growth.

4). Swim.

5). Laugh more, bitches!

Blogging on the iPhone is not so bad. More on that soon, including my review of the mophie juice pack which totally fixes the battery life issue. Teaser.

Peace, love, and laughter in 2009.

  • Is that your new pool?
  • You are the second person to ask that, but sadly NO it is not my new pool. This was taken at my gym (the hills is westlake), where I was writing the post. Since I needed a pic and I mentioned swimming I just snapped this quickly this morning. It's a nice lap pool.
